Description of Externship:

Externs interested in applying to our residency program typically spend 2 weeks with us. The first week is on necropsy and the second week is on surgical biopsy. On each service externs are expected to take their own cases, trim tissues, read slides, and write reports. Guidance and feedback are provided by pathology residents and faculty. Externs are also expected to attend and participate in resident rounds (3 to 4 per week); rotating topics include gross pathology, histopathology, neuropathology, dermatopathology, cardiopathology, ophthalmic pathology, laboratory animal pathology, clinical pathology, wellness, special species, and journal club. Our necropsy caseload is approximately 1250 accessions per year: 30% small animal, 40% large animal, and 30% non-domestic species. Our biopsy caseload is approximately 5300 cases per year.

Externs must be vaccinated against rabies and SARS-CoV-2. We only host one or two externs at a time.
