Program Objectives

  • To provide veterinary students exposure to the practice of pathology.
  • To encourage veterinary students to pursue post-DVM graduate training in preparation for careers as veterinary anatomic or clinical pathologists.

Program Details

The ACVP Student Externship Scholarship Program provides scholarships to veterinary students who have been accepted to participate in an externship program organized by government, academic, or private entities or who have identified a pathology-related experience or item that would provide value for continued exposure to the field of veterinary pathology. Direct interaction with on-site diplomates of the ACVP, ECVP, or JCVP are encouraged when possible. Multiple experiences/items can be funded in a single application. Ideally, this experience will add something new to the pathology experiences that the student has exposure to during veterinary school.  Factors that are considered in selecting award recipients and the amount of the award are listed and briefly described below.  They are not listed in order of importance but are included to assist the applicant in preparing the application form and letter.

  • Goals of, and value provided by, the externship(s)/experience(s)/item(s). The applicant should describe what is unique about the externship/experience/item and clearly articulate what they hope to accomplish (i.e. complete a project, gain appreciation for breadth of the pathology profession, perform necropsy on an elephant, network, etc.). For a list of externship opportunities (non-inclusive), please visit Externship Opportunities. If pursuing an externship, institutions that have an established externship program and/or a pathology training program will be prioritized.
  • Availability of supporting funds.
  • Career goals. Preference is given to veterinary students considering a career in veterinary anatomic or clinical pathology, but all veterinary students are encouraged to apply.
  • Extracurricular activities, grade point average, and class rank.
  • Previous ACVP scholarships. Previous recipients of the externship scholarship are encouraged to apply, although priority will be given to those who have not been previously awarded.

Scholarship funds will be distributed upon submission of a report summarizing the experience.
