Program overview:
The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory resides within the heart of the Bluegrass and Thoroughbred industry. The diagnostic laboratory sees roughly 3,000 autopsy accessions and 2500 biopsy accessions annually which are read and interpreted by 7 veterinary pathologists (6 ACVP boarded). Autopsy caseload consists of roughly 50% equine, 25% bovine, and 25% companion animal, poultry, and exotic cases.
The UKVDL pathology section is composed of seven faculty pathologists, two staff pathologists, four histology technicians, five full-time necropsy technicians and five part-time necropsy workers. We have a high necropsy and biopsy case load, which provides a significant learning opportunity. The UKVDL veterinary anatomic pathology residency program is a three-year standard route residency training program as outlined by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Support for this training program is through UKVDL and the LMU College of Veterinary Medicine. Our current trainee responsibilities include a set number of cases from the necropsy and biopsy service read out with the duty pathologist on a weekly basis. Other learning opportunities include: weekly journal club, textbook review, gross rounds; biweekly presentation of cases at pathology rounds; monthly joint lab animal rounds and zoo rounds. Additionally, residents take an active role in teaching 4th year LMU students on the necropsy floor.
