Description of Externship:
Inotiv is a multi-site contract research organization (CRO) that provides preclinical and early clinical research services and animal model services to pharmaceutical, medical device, chemical, biotechnology, and agricultural companies, as well as academic institutions. Externships at several of our sites are available for residents currently in anatomic pathology training programs and pathology-focused veterinary students in the clinical rotation phase of their curriculum for exposure to careers in toxicologic pathology and further training in laboratory animal pathology, investigative pathology, and preclinical safety assessment. Trainees gain hands-on microscopic pathology experience with a variety of laboratory animal species, as well as experience with general & specialized toxicologic pathology concepts and, depending on the site, exposure to other facets of CRO work through involvement with other departments and scientists.
Extern activities will include: histopathology evaluation of lab animal species that are not extensively assessed in academic residency training (mice, rats, primates, Göttingen minipigs, rabbits, etc.); review of toxicology and investigative studies in conjunction with Inotiv pathologists; review and discussion of literature and teaching materials; and/or exposure to and discussion of the role of toxicologic pathologists across a broad range of pathology modalities. These experiences provide students a unique opportunity to experience careers in toxicologic pathology and learn from hands-on training. Additionally, abundant self-study materials are available, including slide sets and reference materials.
The multiple Inotiv pathology sites offer a range of experiences for the extern candidate, as well as involvement with our almost 30 board-certified pathologists. We will be happy to guide interested extern candidates to an available facility that will fit their specific interests.
Resident candidates should be enrolled in or recent graduates of a veterinary anatomic pathology residency program and have a strong interest in toxicologic pathology. Veterinary student candidates should be enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary college, be highly self-motivated, and have a clear and demonstrable interest and experience in anatomic pathology, particularly histopathology.
Enquiries should include curriculum vitae, contact information for references, and a letter of interest, describing interests, goals, professional background, and pathology experience.
