Description of Externship:
The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), located just west of Portland, Oregon is one of 7 NIH-funded national primate research centers and is an institute within the Oregon Health and Science University. ONPRC is a center of biomedical research focusing on nonhuman primate (NHP) models. ONPRC supports a colony of over 4500 NHP, primarily rhesus macaques. The Pathology Services Unit within the Division of Comparative Medicine unit is staffed with 3 veterinary pathologists, all of whom are diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, as well as a postdoctoral trainee in veterinary pathology. We have a caseload of approximately 900 necropsies of laboratory NHP annually. We have archival materials (gross images and histologic slides) compiled over 40 years. Opportunities for externs include observation of post mortem examinations of NHP for research and diagnostic purposes, review of histologic material with pathologists experienced in NHP pathology, guided self-study utilizing normal and disease digitized study sets and database, review of archival materials, and participation in didactic seminars including the Joint Pathology Center Wednesday Slide Conference and Pathology Unit Rounds.
