Externs are expected to perform prosections, generate gross necropsy reports, and present necropsy findings to students and clinicians at biweekly gross necropsy rounds.  Attendance at daily histology rounds (surgical biopsy, ocular pathology), clinical pathology rounds, dermatopathology and diagnostic pathology rounds, gross rounds, and weekly seminars is also expected. Necropsy cases include small, large, zoo, and wild animals submitted primarily from the UWVC teaching hospital, with a significant number of additional cases submitted from the Milwaukee County Zoo, International Crane Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.  Depending on availability, externs may also have opportunities to spend part of the rotation with the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin, and the Research Animal Resource Center’s laboratory animal pathology service.
