Description of Externship:
The Department of Pathology offers the opportunity to experience anatomic pathology residency training in conjunction with the pathologists at the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Externs interact with pathologists, residents, and veterinary students in a necropsy service with a varied caseload, then follow cases to final diagnosis through correlation of histologic examination and ancillary test results. Externs also interact with pathologists and residents in our surgical biopsy and Zoo and Exotic Animal Pathology services. During the academic year, externs participate in weekly histopathology seminar and courses prepared for pathology residents such as general pathology, systemic microscopic pathology, diagnostic oncology, and laboratory animal pathology. Externs participate in weekly gross rounds, histopathology rounds, and journal club with the residents. Externs are expected to either develop material for gross pathology review or write a case based article for publication (e.g. Pathology in Practice).
Deadlines are flexible and externs are selected on an ongoing basis throughout the year.
