Description of Externship:

The University of Florida, Veterinary Forensic Sciences Laboratory (VFSL)in Gainesville, FL offers an externship program in Veterinary Forensic Science to junior and senior veterinary students.  The VFSL aids in the investigation of cases of suspected animal cruelty and neglect, sudden and unexpected death, and any other case that might involve potential litigation.  The extern will learn about various investigative techniques (including the forensic autopsy) used during veterinary forensic investigations.  Students will learn about evidence handling protocols, forensic autopsy/necropsy techniques, and will be exposed to other disciplines such as postmortem imaging and forensic DNA analysis.  Due to the legal nature of the casework, in some instances, case exposure will be limited to observation only.

Period of internship: The externship period is 1-2 weeks long.
