Description of Externship:

The University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville, FL offers an externship program in the Forensic Pathology Section of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories to junior and senior veterinary students with an interest in veterinary forensics.  The forensic pathology section aids in the investigation of cases of suspected animal cruelty and neglect, sudden and unexpected death, and any other case that might involve potential litigation.  The extern will learn about various techniques used during veterinary forensic investigations.  Students will learn about evidence handling protocols, forensic autopsy/necropsy techniques, and will be exposed to other disciplines such as postmortem imaging and forensic anthropology.  Due to the legal nature of the casework, in some instances case exposure will be limited to observation only.  Externs are expected to attend resident and faculty-organized slide seminars and lectures. 

Period of internship: The externship period is 1-2 weeks long.
