Activities include participation in the Diagnostic Pathology rotation with the senior veterinary students, attendance of weekly dermatopathology and monthly ocular pathology rounds, possible attendance of surgical biopsy review sessions with pathology faculty and residents, and study of histopathology slide sets. Externs will mimic residency activities by constructing reports for one or two necropsy cases, if possible working up the selected cases from start to finish. Externs also attend the weekly Wednesday Slide Conferences, the biweekly journal club, and any courses that are being taught at the time. The diagnostic case material is highly variable, with representation of many different species (large, small, exotic/zoo animals), derived from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, private practitioners, zoological gardens in the area, and private individuals.
Externs must be vaccinated against Rabies. Externships will be filled on a first come basis and are limited to one or two at a time. The summer and early fall months are typically in highest demand, so early application is encouraged. Applications must include a CV & letter of intent.
