Annual Meeting Abstract Awards

Annual Meeting abstract awards recognize outstanding veterinary pathology research. Individuals who wish to have their research considered for recognition should be aware of abstract submission deadlines and the criteria for each specific award.

See Abstract Information.

General Information for Award Submissions

To apply for award consideration, submit an abstract via the abstract portal by published deadlines and select applicable awards at the time of submission. Submitters may apply for up to two awards.

To assist with selecting award categories with a maximum of two awards per submitter, refer to the information below. Please note that submitters are responsible for fulfilling the requirements of each award selected.  ACVP may determine that a submission would be better suited for a different Focused Scientific Session category or award category, based on review. In the event of such a change, submitters will be notified.

Resident awards are open to graduate students, current veterinary clinical pathology and anatomic pathology residents, and residents within six months of separation from a training program in which the abstract represents work conducted during the residency program.

All veterinary student abstracts are considered for the ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award. Additionally, veterinary students may apply for either the ACVP Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals Award or the STP Veterinary Pathology Resident and Student Poster Award.

ACVP Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals Award

This award was endowed through a gift of royalties from publication of “Pathology of Wildlife and Zoo Animals” by the editors to the ACVP. To apply for this award, submit an abstract and indicate your interest by selecting the appropriate box under the Awards tab in the abstract submission system.

Purpose
Travel awards are given to encourage veterinary students, residents and graduate students to present research and investigations into naturally occurring diseases of non-domestic species at the ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting. Awardees will be selected based on the quality of the submitted abstract, and judged on scientific merit, health, and conservation (in situ or ex situ) significance. The Awardee will receive $500.

Eligibility
To be eligible to compete for this award, submitters must be a veterinary student, resident or graduate student and have had their abstract accepted for presentation (oral or poster). Awardees should plan on presenting at the meeting.

Award Announcement
Recipients will be informed of the award in late September.

ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award

To qualify, veterinary students must submit an abstract and present a quality poster of pathology-related research or case work material at the Annual Meeting. Meeting registration will be at the expense of the student. One abstract per student will be considered.

To be eligible for the Veterinary Student Poster Award, the student must:

  • Be the first author of the presentation
  • Have performed the major portion of the work
  • Be currently enrolled as a veterinary student
  • The poster must present original work of the competitor or group completed during the period of student training.

All veterinary student abstracts are considered for the ACVP Veterinary Student Poster Award. A limited number of veterinary student abstracts will be selected for oral presentation at the Veterinary Student Selected Poster Platform Presentation Session, in addition to their poster presentations. The Veterinary Student Selected Poster Platform Presentations is not a component of the award. Veterinary students will be notified after the review period if they are selected for an oral presentation. Given that the oral presentations are selected prior to judging, it is possible that an awardee may also be providing an oral presentation.

Awards of $250 each will be presented for:

  • Best diagnostic pathology poster
  • Best experimental disease poster
  • Best natural disease poster

An additional award of $250 will go to the ACVP-recognized Student Chapter (if the recipient is a member of a Student Chapter).

ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award

Purpose
The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) encourage trainees in veterinary pathology to participate in the Annual Meetings of both organizations. The ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award is available to graduate students and/or residents in veterinary pathology for travel to and participation in the Annual Meeting of the AAVLD.

The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 grant from the ACVP to help defray travel and lodging costs associated with attending and presenting at the AAVLD Annual Meeting. The recipient will be granted a waiver for the AAVLD meeting registration fee.

Eligibility
Candidates for the Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award must be veterinarians or other medical professionals currently enrolled in a full-time residency program and/or graduate program in veterinary pathology or a related discipline in the U.S. or Canada. Candidates who have completed a graduate and/or residency program in veterinary pathology within a year before the AAVLD meeting are eligible to compete.

Candidates should be aware of the requirement for the award recipient to attend and present their work at the AAVLD Annual Meeting in the calendar year following the ACVP meeting at which the award is given (2024 AAVLD Annual Meeting).

Application and Selection Procedure
The presentation must represent original work of the applicant completed during his/her residency or graduate program.

A limited number of oral presentations will be invited from abstracts submitted for the Diagnostic Pathology Focused Scientific Session at the ACVP Annual Meeting. If an individual wishes to compete for both the ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award and the ACVP Young Investigator Award from the same abstract, they will be required to make both a poster and an oral presentation. On the abstract submission site, an applicant can choose either a poster (if also applying for YIA) or oral presentation and still be eligible for this award, but only the travel award finalists will be asked to give oral presentations.

Judging
The judging panel consisting of ACVP Diplomates will select the best oral presentation by a trainee as well as a runner-up*. The presentation will be judged on originality and creativity, impact, organization, interpretation of findings and quality of the visual aids.

*If the selected candidate is unable to attend the next AAVLD Annual Meeting, then the runner-up will receive the award.

Timeline
If you would like to be considered for this award, submit your abstract online by the stated deadline and indicate your interest by checking the applicable award box. Trainees will be notified in August if their abstract has been selected for oral presentation in the Diagnostic Pathology Focused Scientific Session.

ACVP Young Investigator Award

Purpose
This ACVP Young Investigator Awards recognize quality poster presentations by veterinary pathology residents and graduate students.

Eligibility
Individuals eligible for this competition must be veterinarians currently enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary pathology or who have completed such a program within the same year as the Annual Meeting. The poster must present original work that the competitor completed during the period of residency or graduate training.

Award Categories:

  • Diagnostic Pathology
  • Experimental Disease
  • Industrial and Toxicologic Pathology
  • Natural Disease

Each of these categories will offer up to three awards:

  • First Place: $750
  • Second Place: $500
  • Third Place: $300

If fewer than three abstracts are submitted within a specific category, the YIA category will be combined with the most compatible group.  If there are more than three submissions but less than five submissions, one award will be given in the category.  If there are greater than five participants in a category, three awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) will be given.

Judging
The posters will be judged by Diplomates representing each focused scientific group. Judging is based on the poster only.

If you would like to be considered for this award, submit your abstract by the published deadline and indicate your interest by checking the applicable awards box.
