ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award
Purpose
The American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) encourage trainees in veterinary pathology to participate in the Annual Meetings of both organizations. The ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award is available to graduate students and/or residents in veterinary pathology for travel to and participation in the Annual Meeting of the AAVLD.
- The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 grant from the ACVP to help defray travel and lodging costs associated with attending and presenting at the AAVLD Annual Meeting.
- The recipient will be granted a waiver for the AAVLD meeting registration fee.
Eligibility
Candidates for the Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award must be veterinarians or other medical professionals currently enrolled in a full-time residency program and/or graduate program in veterinary pathology or a related discipline in the U.S. or Canada. Candidates who have completed a graduate and/or residency program in veterinary pathology within a year before the AAVLD meeting are eligible to compete.
Candidates should be aware of the requirement for the award recipient to attend and present their work at the AAVLD Annual Meeting in the calendar year following the ACVP meeting at which the award is given (2019 AAVLD Annual Meeting).
Application and Selection Procedure
The presentation must represent original work of the applicant completed during his/her residency or graduate program.
Five or more oral presentations will be invited from abstracts submitted for the Diagnostic Pathology Focused Scientific Session at the ACVP Annual Meeting. This means that if you wish to compete in this category, it counts as one of your two abstract submissions, and you may or may not be selected as a finalist. Commonly, finalists for this award may be required to give both a poster too if competing for both the YIA poster award and the ACVP/AAVLD Diagnostic Pathology Travel Award from the same abstract. On the website, an applicant can choose either a poster (if also applying for YIA) or oral presentation and still be eligible for this award, but only the travel award finalists will be asked to do oral presentations.
Judging
The judging panel consisting of College Diplomates will select the best oral presentation by a trainee as well as a runner-up*. The presentation will be judged on originality and creativity, impact, organization, interpretation of findings and quality of the visual aids. The recipient will attend and present the same oral presentation at the next AAVLD Annual Meeting.
*If the selected candidate is unable to attend the next AAVLD Annual Meeting, then the runner-up will receive the award.
Award Announcement
The recipient of the award will be announced at the ACVP Awards and Recognition Event on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

ASVCP Young Investigator Award
Background
This award was inaugurated in 2000 to recognize veterinary clinical pathology trainees (residents or graduate students) with outstanding oral presentations during the ASVCP Focused Scientific Sessions (FSS) at the ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting. While one award annually was initially provided, two awards are currently given for excellent oral presentations providing new knowledge in the field of veterinary clinical pathology. One is for the best oral presentation involving basic science research and one for the best oral presentation involving applied or translational research or case reviews.
Eligibility
Candidates must have a degree in veterinary medicine and be enrolled in a residency or graduate program in veterinary clinical pathology or a related discipline. The oral presentation must be given by candidates during the ASVCP Clinical Pathology FSS at the ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting. The presentation must describe original work of the competitor that involves clinical, translational, or basic research relating to clinical pathology. Each resident or graduate student may submit only one presentation for this competition in a single year. Candidates awarded a YIA the preceding year will not be eligible for a YIA in the subsequent year.
Award Categories
Two awards will be given to recognize presentations providing new knowledge in veterinary clinical pathology. One award will be given for the best oral presentation involving applied or translational research or case reviews and one will be for the best oral presentation involving basic research. The award category can be requested by the student, but final assignment of the category will be determined by the Chair of the Clinical Pathology Focused Scientific Group (typically the ASVCP President-Elect) and the Immediate Past President of the ASVCP. Candidates will be notified of the final category assignment prior to the meeting, typically via e-mail.
Call for Applications
Trainees apply for the award at the time of online abstract submission via the ACVP website which this year is July 2, 2018.
Selection procedure
Award selection will be based on scientific content, abstract composition, clarity of presentation, and ability to answer questions.
Finances and Award Presentation
Recipients are notified (via e-mail) by the Immediate Past-President congratulating them and informing them that they should be present at this session to accept their award. The Immediate Past-President also notifies via e-mail candidates not receiving awards of this decision. Each recipient will receive a $500 check from the ASVCP and a congratulatory letter. The awards are presented to the recipients at the beginning of the ASVCP Mystery Slide Session at the ACVP/ASVCP Annual Meeting.
