Description of Externship:

The Emory National Primate Research Center (ENPRC) is a multi-disciplinary research institute within Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center, specializing in the research into major infectious diseases of humans, behavioral neuroscience, neurologic and psychiatric disorders, and neuropharmacology.

The McClure Externship in Comparative Pathology at ENPRC is offered to 3rd- & 4th-year veterinary students and to post-doctoral DVMs specializing in veterinary pathology. The externship is awarded to up to 4 students per year; providing a generous stipend.

The externship program is designed to provide exposure to all aspects of our nonhuman primate and rodent caseloads. Externs will have the opportunity to perform necropsies and microscopic evaluations of nonhuman primate and rodent cases, as well as rotate through our on-site histology and clinical pathology laboratories. Fall externships include attendance at our resident training course, “Laboratory Animal Pathology”. The extern will work closely with the ACVP-certified pathologists and interact with the ENPRC laboratory animal veterinarians. Opportunities to shadow a clinical veterinarian are available.

Externs will attend necropsies during their rotation and assume responsibility for histopathology on at least one case. Close supervision will be provided by our pathologists. Attendance at ENPRC combined medicine and pathology rounds, multi-institutional pathology rounds, and NPRC Virtual Slide Conference is prioritized. Externs are required to give a short presentation at the conclusion of their visit. A positive attitude and willingness to learn are important, as background reading for diagnostic cases is strongly encouraged. The extern will have the opportunity to utilize case materials and our database to submit abstracts and/or papers to professional conferences (ACVP, APV) and/or journals.

Interested students should contact Ian Moore, DVM, PhD, DACVP at [email protected] for more information.

To apply, please provide your CV, letter of intent, including your professional goals and previous pathology experience, veterinary school transcript and the name of two educational/professional references. Also, we require a letter from each applicant’s home institution that gives approval for the student to participate and confirms the student is covered by the institution’s liability insurance.
