Programs Offered
The Department of Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology offers one year training programs in the fields of basic veterinary pathology, and in zoo animal and wildlife pathology. Candidates graduate with a Masters of Veterinary Studies in the respective area. The one year program in veterinary pathology offers training in basic diagnostic and applied pathology, and involves rotations through laboratory medicine, microbiology, histopathology, and parasitology. Candidates are expected to develop basic skills in all these areas with particular emphasis on the understanding and diagnosis of diseases in dogs and cats. The one year program in zoo animal and wildlife pathology is run in association with the Zoological Parks board of New South Wales. Candidates will be primarily stationed in the pathology registry at Taronga Zoo, Sydney, where they will be exposed to laboratory diagnosis of disease. Emphasis will be placed on morbid anatomy and histopathology. In addition, basic laboratory training will be given in the Department of Veterinary pathology and Bacteriology.

The Department of Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology also offers research MVSc and PhD programs related to the research interests of specific academic members of the staff.

Types and Numbers of Appointments
Two positions are available in the Master of Veterinary Studies in Veterinary Pathology and one position in the Master of Veterinary Studies in Zoo Animal and Wildlife Pathology. Positions for research MVSc and PhD programs are dependent on the availability of funding.

Facilities
The Department of Veterinary Pathology and Bacteriology is situated on the main campus of the University of Sydney. It provides an exclusive diagnostic service to the Sydney University Veterinary Teaching Hospital which primarily treats dogs and cats. Additional diagnostic material is received from external veterinary practices. The research interests of the department are varied but there is strong interest in the immunopathology of infectious and other causes of disease. There are good library facilities within easy access of the department.

Community
The University of Sydney is the oldest university in Australia and is situated fifteen minutes by public transport from the heart of Sydney. The University of Sydney has excellent sporting facilities and several colleges and halls of residence available for short and long term accommodation. Sydney has superb entertainment and cultural facilities. Outside activities are encouraged by the favorable climate and the numerous national parks and beaches situated in and around Sydney.

Stipends and Maintenance
No stipends are currently available in the programs for Master of Veterinary Studies. A range of stipends are available for research MVSc and PhD programs.
