Programs Offered
The Department of Pathology and Microbiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College offers a combined residency/graduate program in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology or clinical microbiology, as well as graduate degree programs and a postgraduate diploma program. The combined residency/graduate program in pathology enables graduate veterinarians to acquire knowledge and skills in diagnostic anatomic or clinical pathology leading to a non-thesis Master of Veterinary Science degree in two years and prepares candidates for the examination to obtain board certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (after the third year). The MSc and PhD programs are for a minimum of two and three years respectively and they provide research training in multiple areas within the discipline of pathology and the pathobiology of domestic and non-domestic species including wildlife and aquatic species used in aquaculture. The postgraduate diploma program is a one-year, non-thesis (professional) program for veterinarians working in industry, government, or private diagnostic laboratories who wish to broaden their knowledge, similar to an internship.

Programs Available: Residency/MVSc, MSc and PhD training programs are available in anatomic pathology, experimental pathology, clinical pathology, wildlife pathology, and aquatic animal pathology. Also available is a postgraduate diploma in anatomic pathology or microbiology.

Facilities
The Department of Pathology and Microbiology is one of four departments at the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island. The Department works closely with the Diagnostic Service Unit in providing diagnostic laboratory service to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and to all provincial practitioners and animal owners. The Unit also serves as the regional resource receiving specimens from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. The yearly submissions are approximately: 1,200 necropsies of domestic animals and wildlife; 3,000 biopsies; and 220,000 clinical pathology tests. The aquatic animal submissions are approximately 2,250 per year, half of which are for necropsy and/or histopathology. The aquatic animal pathology laboratory provides diagnostic services and technical assistance to the aquaculture industry in the Atlantic region, other parts of Canada and internationally.
