Programs Offered
The Division of Comparative Pathology, Department of  Pathobiology (VP), College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), offers two formal combined Residency/PhD programs, one in anatomic pathology and one in clinical pathology, with stipends guaranteed for three years pending satisfactory progress. Generally, the first two years of each program are devoted to class work and residency training centered around cases submitted by both the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and by practicing veterinarians to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL), which also is part of the college. The third year is a transitional year as the student progresses into a formal PhD research program. The fourth and fifth years are devoted predominantly to research. A specialization in toxicologic pathology within the anatomic pathology program is also available, with course work and research emphasis on toxicology. VP and the VDL also offer the option of a three year residency program in anatomic pathology, similar in many ways to the combined program, but which does not progress into PhD research. In addition, VP and the VDL offer a three_year Residency in Zoological Pathology in collaboration with the Brookfield Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoological Gardens and the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. These programs are organized within a multidisciplinary academic department containing scientists performing research in the fields of bacteriology, immunology, virology, molecular genetics, molecular parasitology, toxicology, epidemiology, laboratory medicine, biochemistry, and diagnostic and experimental pathology.

Collaborative research opportunities, already ongoing, are available in the School of Medicine, Division of Nutritional Sciences, and the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences, Animal Sciences, Microbiology, Food Science and Human Nutrition, Entomology, and Veterinary Clinical Medicine. Interactions with these units include research opportunities, joint seminar series, journal clubs and classes. A wide variety of courses are available both within the college and on the main university campus, including pathology, toxicology, pharmacology, cancer biology, biochemistry, nutrition, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, microbiology, statistics, and cell and molecular biology.

Types and Numbers of Appointments
Currently, there are thirteen residency/PhD positions (9 in the combined program – including 3 in toxicologic pathology, 2 in the residency program, 2 in clinical pathology).

Facilities
The Department of Veterinary Pathobiology has research laboratories that are well_equipped for standard and specialized procedures in pathology, microbiology, immunology, virology, parasitology, epidemiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and ecology. Complete animal_care facilities, including a 75_acre farm, and confinement and conditioning quarters are readily available. Analytical instrumentation includes liquid scintillation and gamma counters, spectrophotometers, incubators, centrifuges, high_pressure liquid chromatographs, and gel electrophoresis equipment. Tissue and organ culture laboratories, a college electron microscope facility, well_equipped histology laboratories, and complete college photographic services are available. In addition VP has established a Core Research Facility in Molecular Pathobiology that includes a complex carbohydrate workstation, microarray workstation, single cell laser capture microscope, quantitative PCR workstation, image analysis workstation, flow cytometry facility and liquid scintillation counter.

The department also has a microcomputer laboratory with Macintosh and MS-DOS computers, connected by computer network to other microcomputers and campus mainframe and mini-computers. The University Biotechnology Center provides services in DNA synthesis and sequence determination, protein sequencing, peptide synthesis, hybridoma technology, cell sorting, and transgenic animals. The Diagnostic Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory consists of 13 laboratory areas that in conjunction with the Departments of Veterinary Pathobiology and Biosciences support the diagnostic activities of this State laboratory. Over 36,000 in_house and referred specimens are received annually, including approximately 1000 necropsies, 6500 biopsies and 3500 cytology accessions. These case materials are used in both training programs. The library system on the UIUC campus is the fifth largest in the U.S. and the third largest university library, with over 8 million volumes available. The College of Veterinary Medicine has its own branch library, featuring 880 specialty current serial titles and 40,000 books and bound volumes. Library usage is enhanced by an interactive computer system, with access to library materials on campus and other Illinois libraries.

Community
The UIUC is located 120 miles south of Chicago, 120 miles west of Indianapolis and 165 miles northeast of St. Louis in the twin cities of Urbana-Champaign (population 130,000, including 37,000 students. Excellent city and county parks and conservation areas provide outdoor activities all year. Nearby Clinton Lake and Lake Shelbyville provide sailing, waterskiing, and camping opportunities. Biking, swimming, tennis, and golf facilities are plentiful. The Assembly Hall (a multipurpose facility) and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the local Station Theatre, Champaign Community Theatre and Parkland College Theatre, present many cultural events in the community. The campus Intramural_Physical Education Building (IMPE) and the Ice Arena have facilities for all types of indoor sports. For quiet enjoyment there are the Krannert Art Museum and the Museum of Natural History which offer periodic special events.

Stipends and Maintenance
Stipends begin at a minimum of $22,000/year for DVM candidates with no experience, with higher stipends available commensurate with post-DVM experience. Also included in the stipend package is a complete tuition and partial fee waiver, as well as partial medical coverage, worth and additional estimated $15,500.
