Northwestern Biological Science Center
Seattle, WA
Programs Offered
The fish disease research program at the Northwestern Biological Science Center in Seattle focuses on the most important infectious diseases of salmonid fish. The research areas include: (1) molecular methods for detection of fish pathogens and for diagnosis of disease, (2) an improved understanding of the host-pathogen relationship and epizootiological features of fish diseases, and (3) methods to control losses from fish diseases. The program is supported by a combination of base funds and by grants or contracts. Senior project leaders and permanent technical staff are generally supported by base funds while grants or contracts are used to support temporary technical staff and graduate students or post-doctoral fellows from the University of Washington where several of the principal investigators have faculty appointments.
Facilities
Located on the shores of Lake Washington at Magnusen Park, the Northwest Biological Science Center represents a state-of-the-art laboratory for work on infectious diseases of fish. Facilities available include more than 10,000 square feet of new fully-equipped dry laboratory space for virology, cell culture (including monoclonal antibody production), bacteriology, immunology, histology, parasitology, and molecular biology. The NBSC also houses a new 9,000 square foot wet laboratory supplied with pathogen-free fresh water to 20 individual bays (each with temperature control from 4-25C) containing a total of more than a total of 300 tanks of various sizes. Within the dry lab complex is a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory containing isolated dry and wet laboratories for work with exotic fish pathogens. Also in the dry lab are a walk-in cold laboratory (4C), walk-in cold storage (4 and -20C), flourescent microscopy rooms, a common computer room and the National Marine Fisheries Service are nearby.
Stipends and Maintenance
The laboratory has no formal program to offer stipends, however, several of the senior staff at our laboratory have faculty appointments at the University of Washington and are able to train students for post-graduate education to include salary and research support.
