and one in clinical pathology in which residents are encouraged to prepare for
ACVP Board certification are also offered. Current research interests include

the pathogenesis of infectious disease (including protozoal and helminth infections)
and wildlife pathology (including birds, fish, and marine mammals).
Staff and Facilities
The Pathobiology & Infectious Diseases sections of IVABS comprise approximately
22 academic staff including 4 ACVP Board certified anatomic pathologists. Most
of the staff have international experience and there is an excellent collection
of pathology training material. This includes the New Zealand Registry of Veterinary
Pathology and AFIP Wednesday Slide Conferences dating back to 1984. A commercial
veterinary diagnostic laboratory with a further 2 ACVP Board certified pathologists
(1 in clinical pathology and the other double boarded) operates from within
the same building and has close links with IVABS pathologists. There is also
close contact with several research units on campus and collaboration in the
use of facilities and equipment.
Community
Massey University campus is located on the outskirts of Palmerston North, a
city with a population of 80,000 people. It has a rural setting and maintains
close links with the government-funded institutes on campus and in the surrounding
districts.
