Programs Offered
The Department of Veterinary Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University offers graduate training for the MS and PhD degrees and residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology for professional practice. The objectives of the Department are to prepare veterinarians and research scientists for careers in veterinary pathology, veterinary clinical pathology, parasitology, and toxicology. Research training programs emphasize cellular and molecular approaches to disease. Graduate students are stimulated to devise hypotheses, to design experimental protocols, and to interact with investigators in other departments. Institutes in the Ames area include the Veterinary Medical Research Institute, the Iowa Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the National Animal Disease Center, and the National Veterinary Services Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Ancillary research resources on the ISU campus include the Image Analysis Facility, Confocal Microscope Facility, Bessey Microscopy Facility, and the Cell and Hybridoma Facility.

Types and Numbers of Appointments
Three adjunct instructor training positions are available that lead to the MS degree, PhD degree, or eligibility to take the examination for certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Rotations are through necropsy and biopsy services, assistance in teaching veterinary students, formal graduate courses, and seminars. Applicants must have DVM or equivalent degree from an ALMA-accredited institution. Research associate positions are available for specific areas of research in infectious diseases and toxicology.
