University of California
California Regional Primate Research Center
Davis, CA

Programs Offered
The California Regional Primate Research Center (CRPRC) offers two residencies in laboratory animal medicine as part of a joint program with the Animal Resources Service (ARS) on the UC Davis Campus. Residents are staggered with one position available each year with a third year in which no residents will be hired. The first year will be spent at the Primate Center, the second year at ARS and the third spent on the residency research project and in specialized training in laboratory animal medicine. Residents receive training in clinical laboratory animal medicine, experimental surgery, epidemiology, laboratory animal management, and laboratory animal pathology. The residency program also includes optional outside rotation through other research facilities such as Scripps Research Institute, Stanford University and other programs. The intent of this program is to prepare residents for the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Boards, and the residency program is registered with ACLAM.

There are additional opportunities for veterinarians as post-doctoral fellows in our research units: respiratory diseases, developmental and reproductive biology, behavioral and neurobiology, virology and immunology, and comparative primate biology.

Degree Opportunities: Both MS and PhD programs are offered. Many graduate students in comparative pathology, cell and molecular biology, physiology, neurobiology, virology, immunology, and psychology conduct their thesis research at the CRPRC. Programs are arranged through University of California, Davis, graduate groups or departments.

Facilities
The animal facilities are accredited by the American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and the animal census includes about 3,400 non-human primates and 200 laboratory rats and guinea pigs. The CRPRC is located in Davis on 300 acres of land, two miles west of the main UCD campus. Approximately 85 acres are currently used for research administration, and indoor and outdoor animal holding facilities. The area surrounding the existing facilities is farmland, and serves as a buffer zone and space for future expansion.

Approximately 25,000 square feet of indoor animal space is available at the Center and is apportioned in the permanent animal wing and buildings. An additional 2,632 square feet is available in three additional buildings. Outdoor animal space includes 340,000 square feet in half acre corrals and 16,000 square feet in corn cribs. Thus, the total space for animals is 383,632 square feet. A new quarantine facility consisting of 2,500 square feet opened in January 1996. Support facilities include hospital and clinics, surgery, x-ray and ultrasound laboratories, clinical chemistry and pathology laboratories, necropsy, locker rooms for personnel, and feed storage. The indoor animal space is Animal Biosafety Level 1 and 2.

The Administration Building (6,679 square feet) contains administrative offices, a seminar hall, conference room, reception area, and support space for the Director's Office and Business Office. The Laboratory Building provides 2,413 square feet of office space for core research investigators. The Colony Office Complex provides 1,644 square feet of office space for personnel. The Research Office Complex provides 1,744 square feet of space for primate pathology and research support personnel. Additional office space for behavioral and neurobiology staff and animal care personnel is located in various temporary buildings.

The major equipment at the Center includes a cryostat, a transmission electron microscope, a DNA sequencer, two ultrasound units, five autoclaves, 11 balances, a FACScan and a cell sorter, a centrifuge, a film processor, 15 digital scales, two scintillation counters, a gamma counter, and a washer.

Community
The CRPRC is located in Davis, a small university town located approximately 12 miles from downtown Sacramento and the Sacramento Metropolitan Airport. Although experiencing rapid growth, Davis maintains a small town atmosphere and excellent living environment. In addition to a diverse array of university and community activities, Davis maintains numerous greenbelts and is known for its extensive system of bicycle paths.

Stipends And Maintenance
The range of salaries for residents is approximately $33,592 to $34,068 a year.
