Cornell University
New York State College of Veterinary Medicine
Ithaca, NY

Programs Offered

Cornell offers a Residency in Anatomic Pathology.  We do not offer a combined program of residency and graduate training, although our trainees are encouraged to consider advanced graduate training upon completion of their Cornell residency. We are part of the Department of Biomedical Sciences but also provide pathology support to the Animal Health Diagnostic Center of New York State.

Residency training is a three year program designed to prepare competitively selected veterinarians for careers in veterinary diagnostic pathology, industrial and pharmaceutical pathology, and comparative pathology or to provide a foundation for graduate studies leading to a career in biomedical research. As such, our training is broad based and designed to demonstrate the range of disease and tissue reaction in multiple species. Rigorous training veterinary pathology includes exposure to extensive case material available through necropsy and surgical pathology services.

The trainee develops skills in recognition and description of lesions, formulation of morphologic diagnoses, correlation of functional changes with tissue structural alterations and an understanding of the pathogenesis of lesions, providing a sound conceptual approach to understanding the pathologic expression of a wide variety of disease processes in common animal species. This training is supplemented by slide seminars, lectures, specialty pathology rounds, diagnostic journal clubs, tutorials and rotation through specialty service laboratories. Learning is case and resident driven with no formal class requirements.

The training environment is further enriched through regular involvement of colleagues from other departments at the College by a steady stream of visiting pathologists, through exposure to faculty and graduate students with expertise in contemporary biomedical technologies, and close working relations with the College's faculty in clinical pathology and laboratory animal medicine.
