Overview and Objectives

The Institute of Comparative Medicine (ICM), College of Physician and Surgeons in Columbia University, offers postdoctoral training in veterinary anatomic pathology. The three-year program fulfills the training requirements for ACVP board eligibility. The primary objective of the program is to provide veterinarians the knowledge and technical skills necessary for a career as a veterinary pathologist in academia, industry, federal government or private diagnostic laboratories as veterinary pathologist.

Facilities

The training program is based  in the Institute of Comparative Medicine in College of Physician and Surgeons of Columbia University, which awarded the first MD degree in North America. The residents will also have opportunities to attend veterinary pathology seminars and closely interact with veterinary pathologists and residents in the nearby medical and veterinary institutions in Manhattan, NY.

Programs Offered

Currentlyfour residency positions are supported by institutional funds, one in veterinary pathology and three in laboratory animal medicine. Each resident is assigned a professional service mentor who is board-certified in laboratory animal medicine or veterinary pathology. Pathology residency training emphasizes the diseases of a variety of laboratory and domestic animals, with unique opportunities for comparative study of human disease. Training involves daily interaction with faculty pathologist in the gross and histopathologic review of diagnostic cases; weekly conferences including gross and histopathologic case presentations; gross pathology reviews; AFIP slide conference; weekly grand rounds with laboratory animal veterinarians and residents. Collaborative research opportunities are available with several departments in the medical center.

Program Duration
Residents are appointed for 12 months and reviewed their performance before going into the second year.

Admission Requirements
Postdoctoral fellows must have a veterinary degree from an AVMA accredited institution and qualifications for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of NY.

Community
Columbia University Medical Center campus is located in the Uptown area of Manhattan on the corner of Broadway and 168 th Street. The CUMC has a subway station, 168 th street located in the campus which makes commuting very easy.  New York City offers many educational, cultural, and entertainment opportunities. A wide variety of cultural and sports activities rounds out life in this region.

Stipends
Postdoctoral fellows are supported by stipends based on the NIH rate. Salaries depend on experience. A housing allowance of 6.7% of salary is also provided.
