Description of Externship:
The WRAIR externship program offers an opportunity for students to gain exposure
to a research environment. Externships focus on pathology with exposure to necropsy
of various research animals (rodents, rabbits, NHPs, pigs), histopathology, clinical
pathology, microbiology and immunology. Additionally, students observe and/or
participate in many of the formal training sessions conducted from September
thru May, at the U.S. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP). Sessions at
AFIP include systemic pathology, gross pathology, Wednesday Slide Conference
and use of the extensive collection of gross and histopathology self-study training
materials. Externs often accompany AFIP residents to assist the pathologists
at the National Zoological Park. Vaccinations against rabies is recommended but
not required.
