Description of Externship: The National Institutes of Health offers summer internships and externships to veterinary medical students interested in biomedical research and comparative pathology. Students will be able to conduct research with leading scientists in the National Cancer Institute; National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; and the National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke. Students will interact with veterinarians in the National Cancer Institute’s Comparative Molecular Pathology Training Program, learn about the multiple roles veterinarians play in biomedical research, and learn about comparative pathology and oncology initiatives in human biomedical research. Summer students will also have opportunities to attend lectures and seminars targeted to students, and present their research and interact with other veterinary medical students at the annual Merck-Merial/ NIH Veterinary Scholars Symposium. Internships generally begin late May and continue through August. Eligible veterinary students must be enrolled and in good standing at an accredited veterinary medical college professional doctoral degree program. Summer Program Stipends are available to participating students and may be available for externships (inquire). Students interested in the summer internship program should fill-out an online application at http://www.training.nih.gov/student/sip/ (Note: On-line applications open early November; select “graduate school” on the application site for university level and include the word “veterinary” in the application for search purposes) on or before February 1, 2010. An email indicating intent to apply should also be sent to ncimolpathol@mail.nih.gov. Externships can be arranged throughout the year. Individuals interested in externships should email directly to ncimolpathol@mail.nih.gov and/or call John Hickerson, program assistant, 301-435-6276.
