There will be two versions of the Phase II certifying examination offered in 2017:

  • A new redesigned Phase II examination, administered at the American Board of Pathology’s Testing Center in Tampa, Florida.  2017 is the first year this version of the examination is being offered. 
  • The traditional Phase II examination, administered at the Scheman Center in Ames, Iowa.  2017 is the final year this version of the examination is being offered and it is only available to certain candidates.
  • Both Ames and Tampa phase II examinations will be prepared and graded by the Examination Committee, supplemented by members of the CEB with EC experience.
  • The Ames phase II examination is composed of test items with good past performance and the Tampa phase II examination is composed of test items with good past performance and as well as new items

Candidate Eligibility for Phase II Examinations:

  • All new candidates must take the new Phase II examination in Tampa, FL.
  • Candidates who have attempted the traditional Phase II examination in Ames, but have not passed any sections, must take the new Phase II examination in Tampa, FL.
  • Only repeat candidates who have previously passed, and still retain credit for, at least one section of the traditional Phase II examination in Ames are eligible to repeat the traditional examination in Ames in 2017.
  • Candidates who have previously passed at least one section of the traditional Phase II examination in Ames, but have not passed all sections within three attempts, no longer retain credit for those sections and must take the new Phase II examination in Tampa, FL.
  • Any candidate who is eligible for the traditional Ames examination in 2017 may opt to take the new Tampa examination instead.
  • As of 2018, all candidates must take the Phase II examination in Tampa, FL.
